Bug Description

Using the "daily" mainline PPA versions of Linux, from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current , both linux-image-3.14.0-999-generic_3.14.0-999.201403040405_amd64.deb (linux 3.14-rc5-43-g0c0bd34) and the earlier linux 3.14-rc1 fail to modeset with both the Radeon 5770 and the Radeon 6750 graphics cards. In most cases the card simply shuts off at the attempt to modeset unless booted with kernel paramenter radeon.dpm=0 to disable dynamic GPU power management. At least once the 5770 gave a text mode after a considerable delay, and the boot messages indicated that Plymouth had crashed, which also crashed my script for unlocking the encrypted boot volume.

Not sure if this is the right place to report this given it is a PPA, if not, where would be the correct place?

I cannot send the lspiv-vnvn.log to a public forum because the publication of exact hardware information could benefit adversaries seeking to attack my encrypted computers by means of firmware-based attacks. I can report that both computers use AMD processors (Phenom II x4 and FX-8120), one a Radeon HD5770, the other a Radeon 6750.

Here is the version.log for the offending kernel, however.

Linux version 3.14.0-999-generic (apw@gomeisa) (gcc version 4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5) ) #201403040405 SMP Tue Mar 4 09:06:13 UTC 2014

As I said before, I cannot send logs containing hardware information that could identify the exact motherboard because that would assist attackers. These machines are encrypted computers handling sensitive information. That's why I don't have any kind of automatic bug reporting, etc installed.

Feel free to delete this bug report or leave it marked "incomplete" or "closed" if it cannot be of use under these circumstances. Linux 3.13 works, I can simply stay with it

This was resolved for me with the release of linux-firmware_1.126 on the Radeon HD6750. Also one error correction: the other computter (at another location miles away) has a Radeon HD5570, not an HD 5770 which is the same basic GPU as the HD6770 from which the HD6750 is cut down a bit. Will test that machine this weekend with the new firmware in linux 3.14

This is confirmed also resolved for the Radeon HD 5570 as of last night (March 8, 2014) by update to linux-firmware_1.126
