Bug Description

I did a clean install of 14.04, updated, dist-upgraded and then installed nvidia-current. When booting I get a black/blank screen. If I add nomodeset at boot then I get a purple box that fills up about 75% of my screen but is otherwise blank. If I wait a bit I can type in my encrytion password and then the machine will continue booting and once it gets to LightDM/X the screen works fine.

From the debug logs I saw it trying to load the i915 driver which seemed suspcious so I checked my (UEFI) BIOS and there was a feature called "IGPU Multi-Monitor" enabled that looks like it might keep the integrated graphics card active even when there is a PCI-E card in place. I disabled that and I now see graphics while booting (and importantly the password prompt for full drive encryption).

I am not closing this myself because it still seems like a problem that many people could experience and who may be unequipped to deal with it.

I'm having the same problem using the nvidia-331.38-updates driver. I followed your workaround on the BIOS, but the problems is still there.
I see a purple border around one of my screens, and then it's just blank with a blinking cursor. I don't have encryption, so I just went straight into the log-in window.
Before installing the nvidia propietary drivers, the log-in screen was great, where I could see the Ubuntu log on all my screens.
