Bug Description

On Acer G570 with Windows 8.1 already installed and an EFI partition

I have tried to install Ubuntu 12.04.4 from USB (dual boot).
sda2 is the efi partition
sda4 is tge Windows partition
sda7 is the Ubutnu partition (mount point /)

When we arrive at the grub installation I have an error: " Grub 2 fails tp install in the target directory".

Then I have tried with "boot-repair" (Raccomanded option) it has created the grub file on the EFI partition.

But then, when I try to boot, I receive the grub windows, but I'm unable to boot ubuntu (when I select ubuntu I received: "EFI disk error".
Instead the boot of Windows works correctly

Have you previously used this USB drive with a different version of Ubuntu on it? Could you try formatting it to clean everything off, and recreate it?

Yes, The first time I have load the Xubuntu-12.4.03, but it didn't work,
then I loaded the Ubuntu release 12.4.04, without formatting the USB. I
used Unetbootin to prepare the USB drive.
I can try to format the USB.

In any case yesterday evening I was able to load correctly ubuntu using
the 13.10 release. With this release grub2 was correctly installed and
the dual boot works.

Thanks a lot !

Ok, yea.. unetbootbin doesn't clean up the disk of its old contents so it ends up making a mishmash between the two releases. Did you happen to use the 32 bit build of xubuntu?

Now it's clear: The first time probably I have used the 32 bit version
of Xubuntu
Then I red the docs on Internet and switched to the correct version:
xubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso.
But I thought Unetbootin cleans the USB and reload correctly !

Ok, next time I'l first format the usb !

Thanks

P.S. Must I do something to close the bug ?
