Bug Description

1. Boot from LiveCD and start the graphical install by double-clicking on the Install icon.
2. Welcome scren, scroll down to Simplified Chinese and you will see one character missing (it show the unicode value instead).

If you continue the installation in Chinese the system installs well but the whole font used to display Simplified Chinese misses about 30% characters I would say, making it unusable.

Note 1: Doesn't happen in Ubuntu install
Note 2: at least one other language is affected by looking at this list: the one before Kurdî. All characters appear as their unicode values
Note 3: tested Gusty Tribe 3 and the same issue occurs

its not a bug at all, ubuntu' s desktop is english, if you wanna display Chinese character well, recommend intall it to harddist and choose Chinese as default language, also you'd install language-pack-kde-zh

Well I have a very different opinion:
1. Why is it working in Ubuntu?
2. Why by selection Chinese for the install it install an incorrect system (well unusable as such)

Overall the quality of the Install for Edubuntu has a different standard as Ubuntu. How can you justify that?

Besides, I followed your instructions and as you can see the language-pack-kde-zh package is already installed... so it doesn't fix the bug.

Please do not lower the quality of such a great product! It should install and work in the language selected at install time.

Thanks.

Fred

sorry, its my fault. you shall install ttf-arphic-{uming,ukai}, because of the space issue of cd-rom, edubuntu can not ship with any chinese fonts, so it won't display chinese characters correctly.

ok great! I just typed the followings:
sudo apt-get install ttf-arphic-uming ttf-arphic-ukai

Then logged out and back in and it worked. Maybe we could have a script doing that after install if CD space is a problem?

Thank you.

Moving milestone forward. (Is this fixable for 7.10 at this point, given Edubuntu's CD space issues?)

Not exactly sure if "Fix Released" is the right status here, but as we don't have a separate installation CD or LiveCD anymore I think this bug is no longer affecting us.

Changed in edubuntu-meta:
status: Confirmed → Fix Released
