Bug Description

Under Edit --> Keyboard Shortcuts.. there is a checkbox for "Enable menu access keys (such as Alt+F to open the File menu)".

That checkbox appear to have no affect what so ever. No matter whatever I have it checked or not I still get the same behavior, that menu access keys are enabled.

This being a problem since I'd much rather not have the menu get in the way of my readline/emacs bindings.

The problem seems to have cropped up in trusty sometime between 2014-02-10 and 2014-02-21.

Defintely concur with comment #3. I updated this morning, having left my system alone for a few weeks, and immediately noticed this (broken) behaviour.

Yepp, that time line sounds about right to me too.

Given that gnome-terminal 3.6.2-0ubuntu1 is from the 16th of December I would assume then that the issue is due to some gnome/unity change.

Also, when running gnome-terminal under Xfce the "Enable menu access keys (such as Alt+F to open the File menu)" setting still works as expected.

summary: - gnome-terminal not respecting "Enable menu access keys" setting
+ gnome-terminal not respecting "Enable menu access keys" setting, inside
+ the Unity desktop environment.

In unity and 14.04 64bits desktop too
I try to disable the toolbar menu 'Display..show tool bar' to don't have the shortcuts problem (I need Alt+a for weechat :) ).
I note that the 'Show tool bar' don't work too.
But it's possible to run gnome-terminal in CLI with the --hide-menubar option:
gnome-terminal --hide-menubar
like that: no menu=> no menu's shotcuts :)

(I'm not using an EN version, so sorry if menu tiltle don't match exactly)

I observe that the menu access keys are correctly disabled if UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 is set in the environment, disabling the global menu to revert to menu bar drawn within the gnome-terminal window.

Therefore, I've marked the bug as also affecting unity, as it seems highly likely that at least some of the fix will need to be in Unity rather than gnome-terminal.
