Bug Description

The network is completely 1000mbps wired and the main server is a HP Proliant microserver running Ubuntu 13.10 amd64. When the network transfers at 1000mbps, the system becomes unresponsive, and usually freezes for a long time; even sound and mouse freeze. When the data transmission is ended, the system starts running smoothly again.

WORKAROUND: emoving forcedeth module at start-up and reloading with:
modprobe forcedeth msi=0 msix=0

Marco Aicardi, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M3N78VM/#support, an update to your BIOS is available (1801). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Thank you for your understanding.

I've never upgraded the BIOS as ASUS report no bug fix in such upgrade but only new CPU support.

However I'll upgrade the BIOS and report back.

Thanks.

I have upgraded the BIOS and it was a BIG issue...

Ubuntu 13.10 never found the network card again; no way of reloading the forcedeth driver, no solution.

I had to completely reinstall the O/S (this time I installed Mint) and I am currently testing it.

At the moment I am doing a dist-upgrade, but with my "fast" 640kbps connection it will take many hours.

Marco Aicardi, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a terminal, as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux 1281930

@penalvch

Thanks for your reply.

I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 yesterday and I'm trying this.

Do you think this is enough or should I try le daily live?

Thanks.

Marco
