Bug Description

Edit; I found a workaround and am satisfied. The problem is still there and I'm willing to help test however I recommend the Ubuntu staff close this and focus on more important things.

Screen is black after logging in. The computer still sort of works and if I'm lucky I can log out. I also once saw a video error message pop up during a shut down. I didn't get a good look at it, but it said something about running slower in low graphics mode and had some options to pick from. Ubuntu itself runs normally with gnome classic flashback no effects however many programs have graphical issues that I think are related. This problem started when updating from 12.04 to 12.10 and continued after the update from 12.10 to 13.10 however this computer has always had weird issues with video. As far as I can tell there are no bios/firmware updates and I'm running correct up to date video drivers.

The computer is a HP Compaq 6510b laptop. Running Ubuntu 13.10

Thank you for any help.

Half way solved.
I found some directions here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=870249 and removed fglrx then reinstalled mesa-dri. Most of my issues are now gone now that I have direct render working right however the default Ubuntu (unity?) kernel still crashes on load. I managed to get it to send a error report so I think this (now old) report is better off closed down unless anyone REALLY wants to get me to test some stuff.
