Bug Description

It seems apport has stopped catching eclipse crashes, so I'm reporting this issue by hand. To reproduce, all I have to do is open a medium sized Java project in eclipse and try to navigate around (using F3 and F4 etc.). After 3 or 4 operations, eclipse always crashes. This started right after upgrading to trusty.

What can I do to help folks debug this further?

Yes I had the same issue after I upgrade to Trusty. I found a workaround in the following web site: http://wyldeplayground.net/eclipse-kepler-crashes-without-any-log-entry/

You simply add the following line to the eclipse.ini file.
-Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.DefaultType=mozilla

This worked for me.

Correction: Modifying eclipse.ini did work. Modifying config.ini did NOT.

Same issue for me. My Trusty is a fresh install from last year, constantly updated when proposed by muon-updater.
I installed Eclipse for the 1st time today, then package eclipse-jdt I had forgotten to select initially.
Launched Eclipse, just explored menus entries, wanted to click on the Tutorials link, noticed Eclipse was unresponsive, before it crashed.
Rebooted my PC, launched the HelloWorld tutorial (please don't laugh ^^), applied the first instructions before Eclipse crashed again.
I've just applied the /etc/eclipse.ini workaround, relaunched Eclipse and noticed the aspect of the welcome screen (where the Tutorials link resides) totally changed. A visible consequence of adding "-Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.DefaultType=mozilla" I believe :)
So far so good, Eclipse didn't crash in the past 15 min... (personal record)

Bad news, Eclipse crashed again when I started the SWT tutorial. That's too much for me, I will uninstall the Ubuntu package and try the eclipse.org version (who knows, it may work like a charm). The Ubuntu package needs to be fixed urgently!

Wow the ubuntu bug list needs culling.

DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04
Package: eclipse-platform 3.x

Updating the package to 4.7.2 and getting the last 6? years of work might solve this and related bugs.
