This is a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.4, had to drop back from 14.4 due to some VGA display issues. Working on it.
Install of OS done yesterday, today I tried instlling Samba, and got the problem report.
This is not the first time Samba has given me problems/errors. I tried the same thing last October and got similar problems.
I thought Samba was a working, reliable, stable system, what gives?

It looks like I was able to resolve this bug on my system after the following steps;

From ubuntu forums, Thread 'Package operation failed' (Thanks to kc1di !)
I entered these commands at CLI;

/B
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
/b

I got the same 'Permission denied' error message described above by wbagay.

I then attempted to re-install samba from CLI

/B
sudo apt-get install samba4
/b

It mostly seemed to work, but had additional error messages;

Unknown parameter encountered: "lpq command"
Ignoring unknown parameter "lpq command"
Unknown parameter encountered: "lprm command"
Ignoring unknown parameter "lprm command"
/var/lib/dpkg/info/samba4.postinst: 14: /var/lib/dpkg/info/samba4.postinst: /usr/share/samba/setoption.pl: Permission denied
dpkg: error processing samba4 (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 126
No apport report written because MaxReports is reached already

Errors were encountered while processing:
 samba4
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
username~$

I tried Update Manager again.
It told me that 'All updates are complete.'

Unsure which steps resulted in the resolution of this bug, or if all were necessary.

Best of luck to all!
