Bug Description

With latest kernel (2.6.22-8) ACPI isn't working correctly.

If I try to use the backlight switch and the brightness switch they don't work. With Feisty they used to work and even the volume adjusting switch used to work.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. A new version of the kernel is now available and we wondering if it is still an issue with it. In addition does you laptop have any other "hotkeys" for example multimedia keys and do any of those work? Thanks in advance.

Hi!

For the new kernel version I'll check later today and report here.

For other "hotkeys", yes, the laptop has those multimedia keys for launching email, web browser and other apps... but they don't work as of this kernel (IIRC with Feisty those keys where working, but I don't/didn't use them that much).

Thanks.

I've checked with kernel version 2.6.22-9 but still doesn't work.

Do you need some more information or output from some command?

When I boot, I get an error that says:

ACPI: EC: acpi_ec_event timeout status=238, expect_event=2

Maybe it can help...

The problem is still present with the latest kernel (2.6.22-10).

A note: booting with acpi=off I can use the backlight switch button and even the brightness button with Fn key, but I have to manually shut the computer off.

I've updated Ubuntu as of today, with new kernel and acpi-support, but still ACPI isn't working.

Same problem here. Still doesn't work on Ubuntu 7.10 kernel 2.6.22-14-generic. If I stop the acpi daemon and do a cat /proc/acpi/event, only the power button shows an action, all other keys are dead. The battery isn't detected, and suspend and hibernate don't work (suspend just reboots and screws up keyboard layout, while hibernate works in a way, but eventually hangs at starting up.
On 7.04, ACPI used to work better, though it was never perfect.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hi milo,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 127820

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I don't have that particular computer anymore. The upstream bug should have been fixed in the 2.6.30 kernel version, but I didn't have the chance to test it.

Thanks for the update Milo. The upcoming kernel for Karmic will target the 2.6.31 kernel. Assuming this was fixed with the 2.6.30 kernel I would expect it to then be resolved for Karmic. Unfortunately as you mentioned without access to the hw it's hard to confirm it's fixed. However, lets go ahead and close this out. Thanks.
