maybe the problem is trying to go direct from 12.04 to 14.04?

This was intended to be an upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10
I started at this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/QuantalUpgrades
and was sent on an upgrade to 14.04 ALPHA

cat /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

All software on my ubuntu 12.04 was downloaded from ubuntu "ONLY" no outside software installed. "32 bit o/s

I have two other computers with 14.04 o/s that work perfectly but my main desktop computer has 12.04 o/s
 and a lot of saved files that I want saved. I want to upgrade to 14.04 if possible.

@jerryolsen - please open a new bug report using "ubuntu-bug update-manager" on the system which you are having difficulty upgrading.
