Bug Description

Rythmbox fails to recognize an edited tag in -some- mp3 files. It behaves as follows:

- If the tag is edited using any application, such as ex falso or even under windows, Rhythmbox fails to read the modified tag, while all other players and editors do fine.

- If the tag is edited using the very Rhythmbox itself, the changes last only the ongoing session. Upon close, the old tag is there again. No real modification occurs, as the change is not recognized by other applications.

-Only a small number of files behave this way.

-Files are not read-only checked.

Specific case: I had three different categories for the same band, in the fashion of: name of the band, Name Of The Band, Name of the Band.
changed first all tags to "Name", and then again to "Name Of The Band". Two albums responded normally, while other continued to have the unpretty cased tag.

Thanks in advance.

I can confirm this in Ubuntu Gutsy with Rhythmbox version 0.11.2-0ubuntu3.

Same here, a lot of tags are incorrectly read. I save all my tags with version 2.3.

Still same problem. tags are incorrectly read. May be Id3v1 tags are given preferences instead of later version tags.

Problem persists on 0.11.4 on hardy

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I ended up using kid3 (even though I'm using gnome) to change v2.4 to v2.3 tags - no luck with Rhythmbox.

Just resaving tags in easyTAG or Rhythmbox or Ex Falso gave good tags in Amarok, but not in Rhythmbox (not persistent in Rhythmbox).

BUT when I REMOVED the v1 tags (using kid3), and then used EasyTAG to resave them, Rhythmbox saw a good tag.

(I couldn't figure out how to use easyTAG or Ex Falso to view or remove just the v1 tags, and I didn't feel like retyping the all the fields.)

P.S. As a side note, the one album I had with NO v1 tags worked in Rhythmbox, but gave Asian characters on both a Sansa Clip, and when I tried unicode v1 tags (silly me) with kid3.

Okay, some mp3 weren't responding to stripping the v1 tags. Many of my mp3s had APE tags. I ended up using foobar under WINE to remove the APE tags (the script for the linux apetag bulk operations was having trouble with spaces in filenames). Problem went away. Interestingly, on many files I had to remove the APE tags TWICE with foobar (multiple APE tags maybe?)

Even so, why does Rhythmbox have such issues with remnant APE tags, while Amarok and other players don't?

(P.S. We really need a friendly native APE-tag remover for linux.)

@Will Taygan: Removing APE-Tags is actually quite easy with "exfalso" and the "quodlibet-plugins". If you have in stalled both you can activate the "APE to ID3" plugin in "exfalso" and tehn remove them with a right click on the file selection.
