Bug Description

On version 0.48 of Inkscape on OSX Mavericks (run via XQuartz), the command to open the Document Properties window results in no effect. No Document Properties dialog window opens anywhere on either of my displays. I have tried restarting Inkscape, to no avail.

Multi-monitor support of XQuartz on OS X 10.9 Mavericks is known to be partially broken - this is a problem which Apple must fix in a future update of Mavericks.

Could you test these steps with either setting of "Displays have separate spaces" in Mission Control, and report back?

1) Launch Inkscape
2) open 'Document Properties' with 'Shift+Ctrl+D'
3) position the cursor in the middle of the current screen
(do _not_ click anywhere, the mouse focus needs to stay in the dialog, even if it is not visible)
4) close the dialog with 'Ctrl+W'
5) reopen the dialog with 'Shift+Ctrl+D'

Expected result:
The dialog reopens with its center at the position of the cursor in step 3

Background: AFAICT Inkscape records the cursor position (not the dialog position) for each dialog on close in the preferences, and reuses that to position the center of the dialog window next time it is opened.

I just experienced this bug on Windows 7 x64 with Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040. Workaround from comment #2 worked. Furthermore, the document properties dialog now seems to be unstuck, so when I open it it appears on a visible part of the screen.

A possible reason for this might be that my second monitor is oriented vertically, and there is a large part of the "virtual screen" which is unused. This can be noticed when I make a screenshot.

I've got this problem but can't fix it with the workaround. I have two monitors, using Win 8.1. File - Document properties does not work, nothing appears. Ctrl, Shift, D doesn't do anything. Following the workaround, Ctl W causes new versions of the default file. Reinstalled. Ran as Win 7 compatible. Deleted share/templates/default.svg.

As reinstalling doesn't fix this I'm stuck!

Never mind, found it in the side tool bar when I stopped looking. ha.

This affected me, too. It would help if Inkscape moved windows to be visible if <10% of the window area is visible when opening the window or dialog box. (Or generally provided a way to get to windows and dialog boxes that are not fully visible when opening that doesn't require an internet search, option setting, and a restart.)

I have a laptop running Windows 10, dual monitors (with different resolutions), and I had the issue in 0.91.? and 0.92.2 (64 bit for Windows).

When I first started Inkscape, the entire Inkscape window wasn't visible at all. It appeared to be off the monitor. I opened the document properties from the file menu, and I didn't see anything. I got the window by doing the following (suggested in https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/261630#yui_3_10_3_1_1511728858794_342)

Edit > Preferences > Interface > Windows > Dialog behaviour
Change from Dockable to Floating
Restart Inkscape
Now dialog appears but all dialogs are floating.
Reset above parameter to Dockable
