Bug Description
After choosing 'Start or install Ubuntu' from the Live CD menu it boots as normal. When the login screen is just about to load [colored background, but no login boxes or other options on screen yet] the system hangs indefinitely.
I know the desktop hanging on some systems with little ram is a known flaw, but my laptop has over 1GB ram.

I'm reporting this bug as well - it happens to me.
Here is some additional information:
System is Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop
Turion X2 1.8 ghz
2 GB RAM
RS480 Video Chipset
X appears to hang upon selecting the default option (install) - desktop appears, mouse responds, but no windows are drawn, no hard drive or cd activity.
Installing in "Safe Mode" gives me the message that X has failed to start - with the option of viewing the log (the contents I can post here, if needed) - going further simply shows the console output.
This is a REGRESSION vs. Feisty AMD64 install CD (which works as expected)
I have not tried Gutsy T1 or 2, but will as soon as I can to see if this is a regression between one of those
