Bug Description

Forking from LP #121163:

Using nv driver from package xserver-xorg-video-nv_2.1.2-2ubuntu1_i386.deb, on an Inspiron 1420 system with the NVIDIA 8400M GS card, logging out of a X window session displays garbage on the screen, I can't logon again and none of the virtual consoles are available, the only way to recover is by doing a hard shutdown of the system.

I tried different resolutions (1440x900, 1280x800, 1024x768 and 800x600), but all showed the same behavior.
