The real question on this one is going to be what does it impact:

$ apt-cache rdepends libgdl-1-0

Reverse Depends:
  libgbf-1-0
  python-gnome2-extras-dbg
  python-gnome2-extras
  libgdl-1-dev
  libgdl-1-common

$ apt-cache rdepends python-gnome2-extras
python-gnome2-extras
Reverse Depends:
  istanbul
  straw
  specto
  sonata
  solfege
  service-discovery-applet
  revelation
  pygmy
  pida
  penguintv
  ontv
  meld
  mboxcheck-applet
  listen
  istanbul
  gvrng
  gtk-recordmydesktop
  griffith
  gramps
  gnome-blog
  gnochm
  gmail-notify
  glom
  freespeak
  freeloader
  foomatic-gui
  exaile
  eikazo
  democracyplayer

  python-gtkhtml2
  python-gnome2-extras-dev
  python-gnome2-extras-dbg
  python-gnome2-desktop
  python-gnome2-desktop
  deskbar-applet

Either we need to find a way to make anjuta work the the current libgdl or all these things have to be tested before we can backport it.

That version of libgdl is listed specifically in the release announcement[1] and checked for in the configure script, so my guess is it's non-negotiable.

OK. Then I'm going to need some comfort that this other stuff isn't going to break if we backport the library.

Ok, I am closing this bug as incomplete on suspicion of breakage. If you can supply evidence that this backport will not cause backwards-compatibility issues, then reopen this bug report.
