Hi, having just installed 14.04, I am having this exact same issue.

The version of lightdm I am running is 1.9.5. Can you tell me how I can get a newer version which fixes this problem, please?

Thanks!!

[Workaround] If you right hand click on the password box, then left hand click back into it, input focus is restored and you can now enter your password.

This appears to be an "input focus" issue whereby the password box is not truly set to receive keyboard input.

Additional info: if I do a software update which results in me having to restart Ubuntu after the update, the bug is temporarily fixed.

What happens is that, following the restart, I can now type straight into the password field on the unity-greeter screen without having to use the mouse workaround described in Comment #6.

However, this 'fix' only happens once: the next time I have to log in, I can only type into the password field using my mouse click workaround.

This temporary fix has occurred more than once, so it's not just random. What is it about a Ubuntu software update that causes this bug in unity-greeter to be temporarily fixed?

Affects me as well.

I have been enabling the onscreen keyboard and then it lets me use the physical keyboard normally. On next boot, the problem is back so I disable the onscreen keyboard and I am then able to type the password using the physical keyboard.

I will try the mouse right-click workaround next time.

This bug may be a security issue, because i had the following experience:

I was working in a terminal window with elevated privileges when i locked my computer to go for a meeting.

When i came back i couldn't log in because LightDM seemd not to capture my keyboard. After some clicking around and trying i finally could log in again and saw that everything i typed was entered in the terminal window as plain text.

I hope this gets solved soon.

I would confirm this is a security issue.

With this problem when you are typing the focus remains on the desktop. I mean you can open applications, and type commands in a terminal or whatever. The only restricction for a hacker in a locked computer it that he can use only a keyboard and he gets no visual feedback (but that pretty much means that a hacker can do at will).
