Panel Mode misbehaves at automatic startup

Bug Description
After setting the automatic startup of AWN and using Panel Mode, sometimes maximized windows show up behind the panel rather than only occupying the space above it. In order to temporarily fix this issue I have to go to the AWN Preferences and switch from Panel Mode to another mode and back again. Please note that this only happens when AWN starts automatically at login and no other panels are enabled.
A similar bug was posted here in 2009 and was fixed: bugs.launchpad.
This bug, however, is present in the newer builds of AWN released this year by p12tic and shows up in Ubuntu 13.10.
