Bug Description

I have a saucy/amd64 instance that was booted using the 20130822 image (checksum c19841cd672d6fcb3d4e78f0f918f8e1) and last updated on 2013-08-29, which I finally updated today. During the upgrade, modprobe btrfs hung in init_module(). If I kill modprobe, the upgrade finishes. The apport gathering is on the new kernel, since apport declined to file a bug with the 3.11.0-3-generic kernel running.

filing here for historical purposes, I expect. The problem does not reproduce on a current machine running 3.11.0-14-generic.

This also affects our environment running on Ubuntu 14.04 / 3.13.0-65-generic. During an unattended upgrade os-prober scans all filesystems. After this the upgrade hangs on modprobe btrfs, resulting in a stalled upgrade.

Because of this automatic security updates/upgrades will not take place.

Thanks Foppe. A few questions:

Does blacklisting the btrfs module work around the problem?

What does the output of `blkid` return for this machine?

blkid gives me /dev/vda1: LABEL="cloudimg-rootfs" UUID="1ff353c2-3fed-48fb-acc0-6d18086d030b" TYPE="ext4"

After blacklisting btrfs and restarting it gives me the message "[1] 1360 segmentation fault modprobe btrfs" after running "modprobe btrfs". But it does not hang anymore.

Thanks for the help. After a while modprobe btrfs hangs again, specifically on "insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-88-generic/kernel/lib/raid6/raid6_pq.ko" and "insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-88-generic/kernel/fs/btrfs/btrfs.ko". Even after installing btrfs-tools.
