Pasting special characters does not work

This is written in the main window of CSSH, looks good, is echoed to the clients and executes well.
user@host:~$ ls -l | awk '{print $1}'
total

Pasting the same command into CSSH renders this output:
user@host:~$ ls -l × awk 'print ¼1'
ls: cannot access ×: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access awk: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access print ¼1: No such file or directory
