I can confirm that the extra characters are also present in the manpage on Ubuntu Trusty.

With version 0.5.3 in Ubuntu Trusty I am no longer able to reproduce this issue, the extra escape characters are gone. I cannot find anything in the changelog (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vim-addon-manager/0.5.3) indicating that the manpage has been changed, but perhaps it got solved when the package got rebuilt. In any case, it seems like this issue has been resolved, so I'm closing it as Fix Released.
