Bug Description

After update I got this very annoying bug.

I can login in console, but, other than occassional windows with apport trash, I see nothing except a mouse pointer. It happens with ubuntu, gnome (all variants), cinnamon and openbox sessions. Only lxde (which a very expert friend suggested I tested) works.

The bug was further complicated by the fact that network-manager is unusable without X, the laptop does not have ethernet and I have only wifi here :(. I had to use usb tethering with my phone to install lxde and suffered a 36hours blackout

Can you follow the "Boot options" instructions on the following wiki to enable additional output on boot:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot

As mentioned on the wiki, it would be great if you can attach a log file which may have captured any messages you see. If you are unable to capture a log file, a digital photo will work just as well. As a last resort you can even copy messages down by hand.

No need. I found what is going on and fixed.

The machine got installed the nvidia-319-updates (I think this is a bug either in the 13.04 installer or in the 13.10 upgrader, as the machine has no nvidia hardware). A dist-upgrade, be it nvidia319 proper, kernel, xorg or whatever, made it then kick in and stop OpenGL working.

Without GL only xlde was functional, this is what I was experiencing.

Once I did sudo apt-get purge nvidia-319* and rebooted everything worked again...

If you tell me which log can tell the history of nvidia* stuff getting in I'll gladly send it. But I don't think debugging boot makes sense anymore for this bug.

Now, for the constant SIGSEGV of wpa_suplicant on resume it would be great to have a fix. Apport reports it like daily, but I've yet to see a solution after several months of wasted bandwidth, CPU and time... :)

The problem is actually with non nvidia users installing libopencv-ocl2.4

affects: linux (Ubuntu) → opencv (Ubuntu)

Santiago Gala (sgala) wrote :

We install libopencv-dev in our development machines.

In the chain of dependencies, it causes nvidia-319-updates to be installed in a machine that has no nvidia, and this breaks openGL via update-alternatives.

If I install manually ocl-icd-libopencl1 before libopencv-dev instead, no problem happens...

I can reproduce it easily and it happened also to a colleague with different hardware. Please ask if you need further info.
