Bug Description

Binary package hint: kde-guidance

This bug is similar to "109273 kde systemsettings module "Disk & Filesystems" does not load" in that I get the same error. There are a few differences, though:

On this computer, I am running Kubuntu Feisty 7.04 with a 2.6.20-16 kernel. This computer has 1 internal HDD (160GB), 2 optical drives, an AMD 64 Athlon processor, and an nVidia 6200GT OC video card. When I open "Disk & Filesystems" under System Settings on the KMenu, everything displays properly - including the 3 partitions (FAT 32 for Windows restore, NTFS for Windows, and ext3 for Kubuntu) and the Swap. I can add DVD's, CD's, my FAT32 thumbdrive, or my External NTFS 160GB HDD with no problems. Everything will pop up and ask what I want to do with it, and if I go to Disk & Filesystems I can make changes to the disks -- like changing the mount point, etc.

The BANE of my Linux existence, however, is my 80GB video iPod. When I plug this in, everything pops up like normal, and I get a fancy little icon on the desktop. BUT, if I want to change the mount point using Disk & Filesystems, I get the "Module does not load" error, telling me that something went wrong during an upgrade without giving me any warnings or anything.

This happens EVERY time I plug in my ipod, and it has taken me a couple of weeks and 3 re-installs of Kubuntu to figure out why this is happening.

So, to recap:
1. Plug in iPod
2. Open new window or Do nothing - both work and both add the iPod icon to the desktop.
3. Attempt to access "Disk & Filesystem" via "System Settings" on the K Menu
4. Receive error messages saying that there are no messages, but still attempting to guess at what you did wrong.
5. click "administrator mode" and notice that nothing changes.
5. pull out what little hair is left
6. right-click iPod icon on desktop, then click safely remove
7. re-access disk & filesystems with now problems.

I can live without this functionality, of course. Thanks for looking into this!

Can you start Disk & Filesystems from command line when iPod is connected? Just open Konsole and run the following command "kcmshell mountconfig"?
Can you provide output of "mount" when iPod is connected?

I'll be away from my Kubuntu computer for the rest of today and most of
tomorrow. I'll test this out around 2100 Zulu (5pm Eastern Daylight Time)
tomorrow (10 OCT 07).

Thanks!

Sorry that took so long. Some update from feisty to gutsy made me lose the ability to login to KDM. I could get to TTY, so I backed everything up and reinstalled. Now I'm having no problems. Anyway, the problem still exists in the Gutsy Release Candidate. Here's the output that Luka requested.

my ipod was infact plugged in. i hadn't noticed it previously. when i unplugged it, mountconfig aka Disk & File systems module, came up without a hitch.

kudos! job well done on this notorious bug. while this fix may not work for all, it gives us an idea about what to look for in the future.

I have the same problem on Kubuntu 7.10 with my 20 GB third gen iPod. When I remove it and reboot Disk & Filesystem gives a correct overview of my disks. Are there any solution for this, besides unplugging the iPod?

We need to check with Scott and see if his recent mountconfig fix repaired this problem. I cannot reproduce this problem with either Gutsy or Hardy and my iPod, however I will confirm due to the amount of "me too's". Thanks!

Found a temporary solution that uses the gnome-volume-manager. I have made a script only containing the line gnome-volume-manager and put it in:

~/.kde/Autostart

Now both my Maxtor disk and iPod are mounted on boot up. But I still get the error in Disk & Filesystems module:

The module Disk & Filesystems could not be loaded.

The diagnostics is:

Possible Reasons:
* An error occured during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control module
* You have old third party modules lying around

That's what kcontrol will tell you if the module crashes (which is consitent with the previous crash report).

I am seeing the same behavior on a fully up to date (well as of 04/10/2008 @ 10:30AM EDT) 8.04 Hardy Kubuntu install and my 1GB shuffle. I don't see anything out of the ordinary in any log files or console output.
I am wondering if the issue that I have been having w/ Amarok not auto mounting the Shuffle is at all related to this. Before the Amarok 1.4.9 update (last last night) I could mount the ipod manually then "connect" it in Amarok. But now w/ 1.4.9, Amarok will not connect at all, I am sure that this new 1.4.9 issue is a totally different issue all together, and I am currently looking for a bug relating to it.

Kubuntu 8.04 has reached the end of its supported life, and unfortunately the Guidance user configuration tool and the Guidance Power Manager were the only Guidance apps to survive. The rest were removed from distribution and will not be receiving any more bugfixes. Thanks for understanding, and have a nice day.
