nm-applet hangs without creating any gui window

Bug Description

I'm running the latest feisty. When I run nm-applet from the command line, it just hangs without any errors and without creating any gui windows -- I have no clue what it's doing or what it's waiting for. I am able to run Network Monitor 2.12.1 from the notification area icon, which creates one window entitlede "Connection Properties: eth1".

I've never been able to run nm-applet, so I don't know what it's supposed to do, but it appears to be totally inoperative. The Network Monitor gui only allows WEP, not WPA. Wireless with WEP works fine with DHCP, but I don't seem to be able to even attempt to run WPA.

Please let me know what more information I can supply to resolve this.

Hi there
do you still experience this issue with the current version of the application?, could you please try to reproduce this using the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron.

Thanks in advance

It still has the behavior described in my original report, even under Hardy Heron. However, I think I now understand that this is its intended behavior. Running nm-applet only adds the nm icon to the notification area and does not terminate. If the nm icon is already there, it still does not terminate but it also has no visible behavior. Running nm-applet does not bring up any GUI windows, such as you would get by selecting from the left- or right- mouse button lists of the nm-applet notification icon, which is what I expected (a GUI application). In other words, nm-applet is not a GUI program in the same sense as, say firefox or openoffice.org or gnome-terminal.

I also encountered this problem of nm-applet on updated feisty.
But on released Hardy, the problem seems fixed.
