Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Geoff Kelsall, bug 1070958 is not considered a duplicate, so please do not mark it as one or vice versa. As well, please don't make people dumpster dive into other reports for information. Please just answer the question in full here, in your report.

Despite this, could you please provide the full computer model as noted on the sticker?

Geoff Kelsall, thank you for checking in with Novatech. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Geoff Kelsall, thank you for testing Trusty. Regarding the upstream kernel, it wouldn't show the word Trusty in the Grub entry. It would be something to the effect of:
3.13.0-031300

Hence, could you please test the latest mainline kernel via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.13-trusty/ (not the daily folder) and advise to the results?

As well, did this problem not occur in a release prior to Trusty?

The problem has occurred on all releases I have tested.

I thought there would be an option on my menu for both my standard kernel which came with 12.04 and for the one I wanted to test. But there is only one entry like that on the menu.

Not being a Linux expert I am a bit confused now whether I am running the latest kernel or not.
geoff@geoff-laptop:~/Downloads$ uname -a
Linux geoff-laptop 3.13.0-031300-generic #201401192235 SMP Mon Jan 20 03:46:44 UTC 2014 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

The touchpad is working fine now but I am on 12.04. and presumably that is because of the workaround. If I am indeed on the latest kernel I guess I need to temporarily remove the fix by doing:
edit /etc/default/grub
change line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="i8042.noloop"
to
 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
run sudo update-grub
reboot

Do you know whether I am on the kernel which needs testing and if so should I take out the workaround to test?

Duh I see there is a date comment on the kernel above so it must be the one I am supposed to test.

Tested and touchpad does not work.
