When does this happen exactly? All the time or only after a suspend/hibernate cycle? On top of that, is the package "systemd-shim" installed on your system?

It does not happen all the time. I cannot say how this is connected to suspend/hibernate at the moment but will do further tests.

The package systemd-shim is installed on my system.

I am experiencing the same issue on 2 computers (one laptop, one desktop) that were upgraded from 13.04. A third computer, also upgraded, does not have this problem. I am willing to make comparisons between the systems if someone could tell me where to start?

Jan Drewes, is it a general issue or does it happen occasionally (like after suspending/hibernating)?

It happens always. And after upgrading yet another desktop machine, that machine has the same problem.

I should perhaps add that I have texlive-full installed on *all* of these machines, and the included package texlive-common (or tex-common?) caused troubles during the upgrade, requiring me to do apt-get install -f and apt-get dist-upgrade manually on all these machines. But I don't quite see how that would affect logout/shutdown affairs?

Lets see, can you attach the output of "cat /etc/pam.d/common-session | grep systemd" please? The entry for systemd might be missing due to the described trouble during the upgrade process.

On top of that, did you already make sure that the package "systemd-shim" is installed?

package systemd-shim was not installed. Installing it solved the problem, the bug no longer occurs. For me, the problem is solved now!
