Bug Description

Hello, I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 with Unity 7.1.2+13.10.20131014.1-0ubuntu1

When I try to move an application to another workspace With Ctrl+Maj+Alt+Arrow it only works if I move the application from right to left or left to right but not bottom to top or top to bottom.

Also when I try to just swith to another worspace (Ctrl+Alt+Arrow) it works except for one diagonal : bottomright to topleft.

Thanks in advance.

Hi ,

Thanks for taking time to enter this bug. The first part of the bug is a duplicate of bug #1241282. I have a fix proposed for that and is just waiting on approval from an Ubuntu dev.

As far as the diagonal, I see that on one of my systems and will have to debug that. Since there are two bugs reported in this single bug, I'm going to change this bug to be only about the diagonal navigation not working.

summary: - workspaces shortcuts broken
+ Bottom-left to top-right diagonal workspace shortcut not working

I'm sure Gnome has eaten the Ctrl-Alt-Left-Up shortcut now as well.

What's strange is that this works when using the arrow keys on an attached, external keyboard, but if using a laptop's built in arrow keys, it doesn't seem to work...

A large selection of hardware controllers for keyboards no not have full n-key rollover and certain multiple-key combinations well just not work. This is a hardware problem and there is unfortunately nothing that can be done in software to accommodate it.

It is quite possible this is what's causing the described problem. A technical discussion of why (some) keyboards do this can be found at [1].

I tried this all the way back to 12.04 and when using the internal keyboard arrow keys, Ctrl-Alt-Left-Up does not work there as well, at least on my machine. I think Stephen is right in that this may be a hardware dependent problem since I can get all diagonals to work with an external Logitech keyboard.

I also looked through gnome-settings-daemon to see if maybe it is doing something, but I cannot find anything that would do such a thing. The fact that an external keyboard works supports this.

As such, I'm afraid there isn't much we can do to fix this. I'm marking Won't Fix. Please re-open or file a new bug if you find other evidence that suggests Unity/Compiz is at fault.
