Widescreen login (GDM) is impossibly small

Bug Description

Setting up the widescreen monitor at 1920x1200 makes the login/gdm impossibly
small. Other text after the login is fine, but it's almost impossible to see
the name as it is typed. This is on Ubuntu Hoary Test Array 3 on a Dell
Inspiron 8600 with the Radeon 9600 option.

Shouldn't the login just be larger in general?

The same login in 1600x1050 on the nvidia of the same laptop model is perfectly
readable.
