Thanks for all your help.

ubuntu 7.04
f-spot Version: 0.3.5-0ubuntu2 (f-spot)

The version number of f-spot was obtained using the Add/Remove application, I don't know the command to obtain it from the terminal.

As a side note, the description in the Add/Remove Application states: "F-Spot is meant to be an easy-to-use photo management application." It is odd to use the term "meant to be" because it implies its not quite achieved its goal.

Could you check if https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/f-spot/+bug/81905/comments/13 solves your problem?

If "sqlite ~/.gnome2/f-spot/photos.db" complains of some error, could you try to delete it("sudo ~/.gnome2/f-spot/photos.db")? (All previous data on photos will be lost)

Correction: the command to delete the file should be "rm ~/.gnome2/f-spot/photos.db"

Sorry for the typo

I have to confirm the initial problem also under Xubuntu 8.04 and F-Spot 0.4.3.1.

Started from console, I get:

rkrug@ecolmod:~$ f-spot
WARNING: The add-in 'FSpot.__DefaultExporters,1.6' is trying to extend '/FSpot/Menus/Exports', but there isn't any compatible add-in defining this extension point
Starting new FSpot server

and that is where it stays.

It created the f-spot directory as follow:

rkrug@ecolmod:~/.gnome2/f-spot$ ls -R
.:
addin-db-001 addins-setup.config photos.db repository-cache

./addin-db-001:
addin-data addin-dir-data fdb-lock fdb-update-lock host-index hosts

./addin-db-001/addin-data:

FSpot.__FlickrExport,0.4.3.1.maddin FSpot.__SmugMugExport,0.4.3.0.maddin

./addin-db-001/addin-dir-data:

./addin-db-001/hosts:
f-spot.addins

./repository-cache:
rkrug@ecolmod:~/.gnome2/f-spot$

Hope this helps. as I would like to try f-spot.

Forgot to mention - a window opens (see attachment) which I can only close via xkill or with CTRL-c when started from the console.

Addition:

I have exactly the same error. I had it several months ago, and after a reinstall, it still remains.
There are no error messages on the cli.

When I remove the complete '/$HOME/.gnome2/f-spot' folder, I get one (probably unrelated) error:
'WARNING: The add-in 'FSpot.__DefaultExporters,1.6' is trying to extend '/FSpot/Menus/Exports', but there isn't any compatible add-in defining this extension point'
When I close f-spot, the folder ' /$HOME/.gnome2/f-spot' is recreated.

In my case, the bug was not in f-spot - it was related to glx and the PROPRIETARY graphic card driver. When I connected a second monitor to the notebook with an ati graphic card, glx did not start - even the fgl_glxgears did not work. When I disconnected the second monitor, glx was working and f-spot as well (after restarting X). When using the non-proprietary card driver, it worked with both monitors, but I could not get the setup working which I needed (two separate X-Servers).
So the bug is caused by the PROPRIETARY ATI graphic card driver.
