Bug Description

No matter if the user sets the preferences to "run based on preferences" or "suspend" or the network activity to "network activity based on preferences" or "network activity suspended" upon a reboot the gui will default the selection indicated by the radial icons in the activity menu to "run always" and "network activity always available".

This defaulting to always running defeats the ability to set preferences to restrict activity by time of day, % cpu, memory, etc use thus severely impacting the user experience in a negative way.

Expected behavior would be to default to "run based on preferences" and "network activity based on preferences" and if a user selects a different choice from the list that the choice is retained upon reboot.

The client should already start on boot.

Are you saying that the manager starts the client and then changes the defaults?

The issue is not with the client, but with the BOINC Manager's GUI. I've attached an image of the permissions default bullet point location. If you select suspend or any other option the next time you restart your system and look at the Manager's preference settings your bullets will appear this way.

Both the debian boinc maintained package as well as the latest PPA (https://launchpad.net/~costamagnagianfranco/+archive/boinc) the selection still defaults this way.

Works fine in 7.2.33. Have you tried the latest version from the PPA?

Can you please try in a Virtual Machine or in a clean environment? I suspect you changed some permissions and the program is not able anymore to save the file

Today March 7, 2014, I reproduced on a fresh VM install of 14.04 and on a fresh 13.10 install. Both were installed with encrypted disc and home options. Upon first launch the Ubuntu Software Center and install the BOINC package. These were installed in virtualbox 4.3.8.

Even after changing the settings to be "run based on preferences" upon reboot the settings returned to "run always".

Please try this ppa and boinc 7.8.1, and let me know if the problem still occurs by setting back the status to "new"
