Bug Description

1) --- Ubuntu version ---
Xubuntu 13.10 beta2

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu Saucy Salamander (development branch)
Release: 13.10

2) --- problematic package version ---
$ apt-cache policy xfce4-indicator-plugin
xfce4-indicator-plugin:
  Installed: 0.5.0-2ubuntu1

3) --- expected behaviour ---
I expect that the xfce4-indicator-plugin shows active speaker icon and after clicking it volume slider.

4) --- observed behaviour ---
xfce4-indicator-plugin shows greyed speaker icon (with three dashes on the right). After clicking it small empty rectangle appears below.

5) --- other relevant information ---
The process xfce4-volumed is running.
alsamixer works without problems.
The same problem appeared with Xubuntu 13.10 beta1 and probably with Ubuntu 13.10 beta1 too.
The same problem appears when I use SoundBlaster Audigy SB0090 instead of built-in VIA8237.
