Bug Description

Sound in Youtube videos in Firefox no longer play, it is completely silent.

I checked Rekonq too, but I don't know if it was working before. It was working with Firefox 23 until today after I ran all available patches and Firefox 24 was installed. I did roll back to Firefox 20, but that didn't solve the issue. I was checking the video on this page: http://www.eevblog.com/2013/09/28/eevblog-528-opamp-input-noise-voltage-tutorial/ Yesterday it worked, today (after patching) it doesn't. Other system sounds work as expected.

On https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/ I noticed that my Flash player is not up to date:

Outdated Plugins Plugin Status Action
Shockwave FlashShockwave Flash 11.2 r202 vulnerable Update Now

I did not download there because it doesn't provide a .deb package.

I tried running /usr/lib/update-notifier/package-data-downloader from the command line hoping to update flash, but nothing seems to happen.

Not 100% sure flash is the actual issue though.

3) What you expected to happen
When I surf to http://www.eevblog.com/2013/09/28/eevblog-528-opamp-input-noise-voltage-tutorial/ and start the video I expect both video and audio to work.

4) What happened instead
Video works, audio is completely silent. Other system sounds work as expected. A random other video on YouTube has the same problem: no sound.

I did a "grep ' upgrade '" on today's /var/log/dpkg.log to list the packages that have been upgraded, maybe that is of some help:

Just thought of the following which might be of help:

I did notice corruption of ~/.local

Chain of events:

- video & sound from youtube video working
- apt-get update|upgrade|dist-upgrade|autoremove
- video worked, sound from video muted, other system sounds OK
- reboot
- unable to log to KDE GUI
- removed ~/.local/ (contents is backed up)
- log in to KDE
- ~/.local was automatically recreated

@Thaddäus Tintenfisch you seem to be correct, the sound in the video was muted and the volume slider was all the way down. Didn't realize these controls were there.
