Bug Description

In 13.04 we could Log Out, Shut Down, Suspend and Restart using the HUD. (Since these items are in the System indicator.)

In 13.10 this is no longer possible. This is a regression.

(See also Bug #1165420 for an issue found in 13.04)

Thank you for your bug report. Are you sure it was working in 13.04? It seems a duplicate from bug #1165420...

Yes it was most definitely working in 13.04. (but yes I agree it is very similar to bug #1165420)

In 13.04, I could use HUD to Log Out, Shut Down, Suspend and Restart. This is the only way I know to do such thing through keyboard. After update, I can't do it anymore.

I've noticed this too when trying 13.10. It works in 13.04 for me (and it's something that I use a lot).

Maybe the problem is due to some interference with Nautilus?

on 13.10 when you open HUD with all no active programs it shows commands to Nautilus (like new window, bookmarks, connect to server...)
hey! in fact, it opens these same nautilus commands when chromium is working too!

on 13.04 it would list something from the tray (like "turn on/off wifi" or "Suspend" etc -- which all are very handy).

I don't think this is a duplicate. Bug 1165420 specifically mentions certain indicators as not being searchable, however, it says that others work fine:

"Other indicators however are accessible and I can use HUD to Suspend my computer or to view Skype status or Ubuntu one indicator options."

This bug (accurately) describes the issue in 13.10 that NONE of the indicators are searchable, whereas in previous releases they were.

I agree with the previous comment, this bug seems to be slightly different to 1165420. Although it might be caused by the same issue, as it is pretty similar!
As far as I can tell, or at least for me, HUD can only access the currently focused window.
To be honest, if I need to access the active application's menu I use the menus. It is much easier to find things that way. (prob because I can never remember the name of the menu I'm looking for)
The only utility I found for HUD was to access network connections and VPNs in Network Manager and some other things in the indicators.
With this bug/regression, HUD is not very useful for me.
It'd be great if it can be fixed!
Thanks.
