Bug Description

Binary package hint: file-roller

When you right click on either oen file or multiple files and select "Create Archive..." in nautius, the dialog gives you two options for 7z... They both seem to be exactly the same, using the same command (p7zip).

This affects my gutsy system, but my brothers feisty system doesnt have a 7z option at all.

If you compress the same files with the diffrent 7z's, it gives exactly the smae file for both of htem (same size, diff returns nothing, and md5's are the same)

Thank you for your bug. That doesn't happen on my gutsy desktop. What version of Ubuntu do you use?

Unconfirming? What does that mean? That it still could be a valid bug, but I need someone else to confirm it? Or does it mean that its been rejected?

The bug was waiting for information, you reply so I changed it to "New" which means somebody else needs to confirm it's happening to him and send him upstream. I can't easily work on it because it doesn't happen on my installation

I've found out that it affects feisty too, if you have p7zip installed (which my brother's pc didn't). If you have a feisty livecd or vm or something, you can do this:
Fire up the livecd/vm. Add universe (and perhaps multiverse, I'm not sure) repos to sources.list. Install p7zip (sudo aptitude update ; sudo aptitude install p7zip) and then try to add some files/a file to an archive. Look at the formats. At the bottom are two 7z's. Make exactly the same archive but using the two different 7z's. Now check the sizes. Exactly the same. Now do a diff (diif archive1.7z archive2.7z). No differences. Now md5sum them both (md5sum archive1.7z archive2.7z). Exactly the same md5.

I'll test this on earlier ubuntu versions when I have time.

Ah I've worked it out. One's for the p7zip package (which provides the p7zip command) and the other's for the p7zip-full package (which provides the 7z command), but I think they both use the 7z command.

Do you consider it as a bug then?

Alec Wright (alecjw) wrote :

Yes, seeing as they both do exactly the same thing, and spit out exactly the same file.

I cannot reproduce this in Ubuntu 9.10 (file-roller 2.27.2). Please re-open if this can still be reproduced.
