Feisty Kernel Crash, suspect APIC problem --CAPS LOCK flashing

Bug Description

Since upgrading to Feisty 64bit from 6.06 LTS 64bit my NX6125 Laptop has gone from Rock Solid to Kernel Panicking nearly every 24hrs when left alone overnight.

I'm sure it has something to do with APIC as when I installed 6.06 LTS I had to use the NOAPIC and NOLAPIC options to make my system run smoothly instead of like slug with double time clock.

When I upgraded to Feisty 64Bit my Laptop kept Kernel Panicking when I left it overnight, the Laptop screen would be black, nothing at all could wake it up and the Cap's Lock key would flash - only that key and it wasn't morse code trying to tell me a message but a steady flash.

I noticed that the NOLAPIC and NOAPIC options were still present on Feisty so I removed them and the Laptop booted as normal so I assumed these options were no longer needed and the Laptop went for 3 days without freezing so I thought great - problem solved but it's since frozen twice but this time the Cap's Lock key stays solid on and not flashing but the Laptop is dead requiring a hard boot as before.

I'm not a Linux Newbie having ditched Microsoft over 6 months ago now but not a hard core Linux user either so need help in resolving this as I'm sure sooner or later these hard boots are going to cause corruption to my system.

I've googled for Kernel Panic messages and can't find anything on the Internet that will tell me what the flashing and solid Cap's Lock signals mean or how to find out what I need to look at within my system to explain what is causing the Kernel Panics.

One thing I have looked at is the Kernel Logs and it used to complain of losing Ticks right before Kernel Panicking with the NOLAPIC and NOAPIC options in place and now with those options removed my Kernel Logs are full of APIC errors every few minutes and the Laptop just randomly freezes.

Please help as I really miss having a Rock Solid Ubuntu system that I have come to take for granted of Linux. If anyone can tell me where to look or what to do to find out more information from my system that may shed light on what is causing these Kernel Panics I'll update this post so that we can hopefully stop this happening and help anyone else having the same issues.

I recognize something that may be significant that I noticed from prior Kernel Logs when I still had the NOAPIC and NOLAPIC options enabled.... and that lines 4,5,and 6 stating many lost ticks and that a driver may be hogging resources but I don't recollect seeing the 7th line in logs before so I'm going to google on it now after posting this...

I'm getting a kernel panic error that I believe has something to do with APCI. I get this error trying to update the kernel to anything beyond the current default kernel in Feisty. I get the same exact error trying to cleanly install Gutsy Tribe 4 from a live cd, almost immediately after choosing the install option. I'm doing this on a zonbu machine that has previously had Feisty working almost perfectly, with the exception of the alsa driver, the reason for upgrading.

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Prior to that, the only readable line is:

setup_boot_APCI_clock+0xc3... and some other garbage. Sorry for the lack of details, but I have no idea how to direct the messages into a file.

Installing Feisty from a live cd again is working for the time being, but I'd really like to have audio working on my machine.

The same problem is happening to me -- the system locks up entirely and the caps lock key flashes until I do a hardware reset.

OK I have finally worked out why this is happening to me since I first posted this Bug entry, I'm using the NDIS Wrapper for my broadcom Wireless chipset in my NX6125 HP Laptop and I found a NDIS Wrapper release log stating that newer releases of NDIS Wrapper resolved certain 64bit random crashes.

So I disabled my Wireless NIC from within Ubuntu and connected to my router with a CAT5e cable and selected the Wired ethernet connection as default and no more crashes!!

I have confirmed that in my case whenever I use the WLAN connection it will randomly kernel crash, but has never kernel crashed when I switched back to a wired conenction.

So I can resolve this my upgrading my NDIS Wrapper install but have not so far done this as being a linux newbie I'm 99% sure it's gonna take me about 3-4 days of graft, lol...

Hope this helps.

If anyone knows an automated way of upgrading NDIS Wrapper without having to re-compile or play with setting everywhere to get it all working again I'd really appreciate a pointer.
