Bug Description

I get a kernel crash when running "airmon-ng start (interface)" this occurs for both built-in and USB connected wireless controllers. I'm running Xubuntu 13.04.

WifiSyslog.txt shows the GPF I experience.

I am also able to reproduce the error on demand.

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote : Re: Kernel Crash

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

hewfish, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, please make a comment to this.

tried the latest daily-live and the module wl is missing. Thus Broadcom Wireless is unavailable and can't be tested.

Bootable ISO of 12.10 also does not have the wl driver. I assume that the wireless driver was included in 13.04 for the first time by default. I may try downloading and compiling the latest driver from the broadcom site and run tainted to see if there is an issue with that driver.

Latest built wl driver (sta) from broadcom does not cause crash. This is a version issue of the wl driver that is included as the wl package. I followed the instructions in the compile guide and moved the existing wl.ko drivers to test. Checked that my compiled version was the running version and re-ran the original command that caused the kernel to crash. My issue was resolved.

Issue traced to bcmwl-kernel-source dkms package. Package is out of date. The bcmwl-kernel-source package ships with a 2011-08-31 driver version. The latest package from the broadcom sta site is 2013-04-18.
