removed update-alternatives nmblookup; then testparms same errors; removed testparms.
purged samba
reinstalled samba.
working.

Thanks for reporting this bug. As I've not seen this happen elsewhere I believe it was caused by an odd update failure. I will mark this invalid (meaning "cannot be reproduced") but if it happens again on the next upgrade please do reopen it.
