Bug Description

After upgrading to 13.10 from 13.04 my computer booted into a black screen. I could hear the login sound but couldn't see anything. Switching to some virtual console isn't working either, nor was anything visible during the boot process.
I also tried to boot 13.10 from USB with a very similar result.
The IGP of the Zenbook UX31A is the Intel HD4000.

Can you follow the "Boot options" instructions on the following wiki to enable additional output on boot:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot

As mentioned on the wiki, it would be great if you can attach a log file which may have captured any messages you see. If you are unable to capture a log file, a digital photo will work just as well. As a last resort you can even copy messages down by hand.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my description, but immediately after the grub menu disappears, the screen flickers once and after that I cannot get the screen to display anything, not even by switching to a virtual console. The only thing I could do, is to remotely login with ssh and copy the log files. Could you please tell me which ones you need? I need the laptop so I already installed 13.04 back on it, but if I can help debugging this, I will upgrade again to 13.10 and get the log files.

I have the same problem. Booting 13.10 results in black screen after grub. The same install runs using an older 3.8 kernel from 13.04.
Via rescue boot I managed to find out that X11 doesn't see any displays.

I have what I believe is the same bug affecting an ASUS UX32VD.

I have also been unable to figure out what logs to post, but the system appears to boot normally with no video output.

I believe it is the same Kernel bug as is reported for ArchLinux here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167463, as the symptoms sound the same and the suggested workaround is effective.

I am able to successfully boot the most recent 3.8 kernel with Ubuntu 13.10 installed, but the default 3.11 kernel does not appear to work.

Workaround:

Switch to CSM mode in BIOS, thus avoiding UEFI boot.

I have the same behavior after upgrading from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 this evening on my Asus UX31A: blank screen and can not get into a terminal. I tried booting from a USB drive with the 13.10 x64 image and got the same result.

I found this forum post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2175602) which suggested booting with the 3.8 kernel from the GRUB menu, and everything works fine.

I'd be happy to submit logs if someone can let me know which logs are needed.

Importance is only medium ? Seriously ? We can't use Ubuntu 13.10 with its kernel ...

I don't know why this is considered of medium importance, since it's a duplicate of a bug with importance level High. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/+source/linux/+bug/1195483

Anyway, this affects the internal monitor only, and there's a new test kernel posted that works (post 72 of the other bug report). Meaning, connect an external monitor, browse to the other bug report, download the kernel and install it, shutdown the computer, disconnect the external monitor and boot the computer. Then all should be fine.

I agree, this needs to be upgraded to importance level High as it makes it difficult for me to test any new daily builds (U+1)

I'm having the same problem on my UX31A. Only the external monitor works, the internal one stays blank. Cannot use the computer at all without the external monitor. I don't see why this is a dublicate with the bug no 1195483 as this only appears with 13.10. Everything worked perfectly on 13.04.

Please change the Importance to "High".
