Bug Description

Binary package hint: yelp

it does not fit the resolution to the tvs screen automatic and when go to change resolution it appears to be fixed on 515 by 500 something, any other resolutions like 800by600 or 1080 wont even show up , im pretty much unable to use this nice looking os interface becouse the ok , cancel , next or back bottoms r hidden below due to the small screen size

Are you filing this against yelp specifically? Or is it just that you can't "change screen resolution"? What program are you using to change your resolution? Please provide more details as to exactly what you are doing, what the software does, and what you expect it to do.

to tell you the truth this is my very first time using ubuntu 7.04-d with the ps3 al toghter, everything runs smoothly and ok the only thing is when i log in , go to system-preferences-screen resolution all i see is

resolution: 576by384
refresh rate: 60 Hz
now this settings are fixed and i cant change them becouse it doesnt show any other options. i expected to see something like 1280by1080 and other options like that because the tv im using is capable of 1080i but instead im stuck with a tiny screen size.

let me know if u would like more info on this matter

try this: open terminal and type code: "sudo nano /etc/kboot.conf" without quote marks, this will open kboot.conf file for editing. then look for this line or one similar: "linux="/boot/vmlinux initrd=/boot/initrd.img" in the following space between the g and root type: video=ps3fb:mode:0 to change resolution automatically. other wise use this chart for your resolution, refresh, and color type: Video mode ID:

0:automode
YUV 60Hz 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p
YUV 50Hz 6:576i 7:576p 8:720p 9:1080i 10:1080p
RGB 60Hz 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p
RGB 50Hz 38:576i 39:576p 40:720p 41:1080i 42:1080p
VESA 11:WXGA 12:SXGA 13:WUXGA

full screen mode: <video mode ID> + 128
dither ON mode : <video mode ID> + 2048

So 720p for example: linux="/boot/vmlinux initrd=/boot/initrd.img video=ps3fb:mode3 root...."
everything after root is decided by your setup config(when you installed onto ps3 in the first place)
then press control+o which will write out and save the file just hit enter and type exit and of course restart. once your ps3 turns on it should work semi perfect though your resolution might be 1124z664@60hz it looks just as good and lots better then 480i, if anyone doubts me: this works for me and i'm a novice linux user, no in fact below that. the first time using linux was when i put ubuntu on my ps3 which was today. anymore ?'s please feel free to email <email address hidden>. Thanks for reading.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I think we can close this.

Changing video mode using the GUI isn't supported at the moment. Instead PS3 users need to use the method described by DoctaSpawk.

Please also be aware of the Overscan/Black Borders tutorial which resolves another display res issue.
