Bug Description

My machine is locking up a few times a day. These lockups seem to be graphics-related -- they often occur when opening a new tab in Chromium or a new window or Unity indicator menu shows on the screen -- but are not universally so. Sometimes the machine will lock up of its own accord when no-one is using it at all.

When locked up, the machine is unresponsive to keypresses and mouse movements; I cannot, for example, switch to a virtual console. It will not answer ssh connections (the network going down is why I think it might be a kernel problem rather than X). It *does* respond to SysRq+REISUB. However, SysRq+1t does not leave any trace in kern.log after a reboot.

I have run memtest86 overnight and it shows no errors.

This started happening under raring; I have upgraded to saucy in the hope that it would fix the problem and it has not. It occurs using both Xorg and Xmir.

I am unable to trigger the problem at will.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

If this issue still happens in v3.12-rc1, we can bisect between Raring and the last release that did not exhibit this bug.

I've now been successfully running upstream kernel for quite a few days and haven't had a single lockup, which suggests that the problem is not exhibited by the upstream kernel.

What do I do next to help resolve this bug? I've set the tags as the bot message suggested above.

The Saucy kernel in -proposed has now been rebased to upstream 3.11.2. If this is fixed upstream, the fix should have made it's way in to the Saucy kernel with this rebase. Can you test the latest -proposed kernel to see if it resolves this bug:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/3.11.0-9.16/+build/5055306

Both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages need to be installed from that page.

Another option would be to just enable the -proposed repository:

Stuart Langridge, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please just make a comment to this.
