Tex Live is not fully tetex compliant

Bug Description

Binary package hint: tetex-extra

Since Tex Live is remplacing tetex, it could be a good idea that the transition package tetex-* (especially tetex-extra) include, or depend on a news package (tetex-backward-compat maybe) that include the latex package that were in tetex but are not in texlive.

For example the package "here" is not in Tex Live, and thus can make compilation of latex sources written for tetex to abort.

The fix could take the form of a simple package tetex-backward-compat that ensure the backward compatibility for tex file written for tetex.

It seems that we missed some packages. We tried to get tetex-extra
depending on everything in texlive that is needed to cover tetex-extra,
but we might have missed something.

If you can check and send us an updated list of packages that would be
great.

Best wishes

I had to manually install texlive-humanities. I had upgraded from texlive 2005. I know this bug is about tetex, but it seems related anyhow. It appears that texlive-humanities-2005 doesn't exist but texlive-humanities-2007 does.

I hope that was helpful.

True, texlive-humanities was introduced in TeX Live 2007. But this is
not related to the tetex-extra problem, which i sonly related to the
list of packages we have to depend on.

Right, but texlive-humanities contains some of the files that had been in texlive-extra. So if anyone is trying to do an upgrade from texlive-2005 then it could very well break things. I had one particular file that compiled fine with texlive 2005, but failed to compile with 2007 until i added texlive-humanities.

Not a big deal to me. I managed to find what I needed. I just thought you might want the information. Now you can do whatever you want with it. :)

Ok I'll try to track down all the missings sty files and where they are in tex live, then I'll list all the tex live packages needed to be 100% tetex-extra compliant right here.

Yup, right for mentioning this. There was a bug in our packaging that
didn't install the
 /usr/share/doc/texlive-common/NEWS.Debian
file which explicitely mentions this. Next version of texlive-base (in
Debian -11) will contain this file with some valuable information ;-)

For now here is the list of the "missings" sty files (I compared an instalation of tetex with tetex-extra and the one with the transition packages)

I still need to find in wich texlive packages these files are.

Best regards.
