Bug Description

On a Lanai (Inspiron 1420) system with the NVIDIA 8400M GS card (and using the vesa driver), when an external monitor is connected to it, pressing Fn+F8 does not display anything on the external monitor (when doing so, the screen on the Lanai goes blank, as expected). Pressing Fn+F8 a second time displays the screen back on the laptop's LCD.

I tried several monitors and also ran 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' to make sure the right horizontal/vertical frequencies were supported. I only tried resolutions smaller than 1024x768.

Several different monitors were tried, and correct horiz/vert frequencies were specified in each case.

Same as bug # 121801: Canonical won't fix w/o input from nVidia. Closing and focusing on nv and nvidia drivers.

Per Jose's last comment, also closing this against linux-source-2.6.22. Thanks.

Hi jose-de-la-rosa,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

vesa's multimonitor support is not a thing that's fixable, really. Use nouveau.
