Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description doesn't yet have enough information.

Which version of Ubuntu are you trying to boot?

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at [WWW] http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies. Thanks in advance!

Sorry for the uncomplete request.

I try to install Feisty with the 64bit-AMD-Disk

I use a laptop with
AMD Turion 64 X2
1 GB Ram
nVidia-Chipset
graphiccard NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100

without any boot options the system halts at the line:
[31.401458] ACPI: Looking for DSDT in initramfs... file /DSDT.aml not found
when the splash screen is active, it shows
kernel alive
kernel direct mapping tables up to 100000000 @ 8000-d000

I tried several boot options i.e.
acpi=off noapic pci=bios usb=bios

but in this case the last lines are
[62.393994] Freeing initrd memory: 7265k freed

Thanks in advance!
Thomas

It'd be really helpful if you can attach the following files:

uname -a > uname-a.log
cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
dmesg > dmesg.log
sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

But I understand that you're trying to boot a live cd, and your log files are not being saved in your hard drive.

Using your amd64 live cd, please only remove "splash" and "quiet" from the boot options. Then, after your system crashes, is it possible that you take a digital photo of the screen to capture the crash?

Im not quite sure how to retreave teh info you have asked the guy above forbut I will send a pick of the error after I getr off work.

Even though this is only a "duplicate" bug report I want to send my screenshot (Plesase excuse the delay). Maybe you can help me. In the other bug report 103092 seems no solutuion for this problem.

I used the AMD 64-bit CD.

Thanks in advance!

@utom:

Does the solution to 2nd problem at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2566150&postcount=25 work for you?
I can't do any better than that, sorry.

This solution works perfect. It's like described: the 'kernel still alive' - message still appears, but ubuntu works perfect now.

Thank you.

Hi, i'm new to Linux and I'm trying to install Ubuntu on my system. I've had the same problem with the 'Kernel Alive' bug. I followed the instructions from http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2566150&postcount=25, I also need to change the res because the display shows up all mangled on anything less than 1280 x 1024 (I have a 24" widescreen) Ubuntu seems to install fine except the desktop doesn't fill the screen.

After the instalation is complete and the system goes to restart it freezes on the screen where it says "Please remove CD, shut the tray then press enter to continue". My only option is a hard reset. Ubuntu starts booting up from the HD in a normal way then when the desktop appears the display is all mangled up. I've tried installing nVidia drivers but I can't because of the restart issue.
