Bug Description

When booting off the live CD for ubuntu-12.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso, ubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso, ubuntu-13.04-desktop-amd64.iso and a desktop installation of Ubuntu 12.04.3 AMD64, the computer failed to start when initializing the cfg80211 module. I know the wireless card is related to the failure because removing the card causes the machine to boot. Also, when booting with the ignore_loglevel option, booting frequently fails near messages about the cfg80211 module. I attached a screen shot of where the system halted when loading ubuntu-13.04-desktop-amd64.iso with the ingore_loglevel option enabled. I know this wireless card normally works on Precise because I used it on the same install with different hardware. The apport-collect is for my current Precise install obviously without the wireless adapter.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1219599/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

This report is missing several logs required by the Kernel Team.

If you didn't file your Ubuntu kernel bug using ubuntu-bug, please run the following at a terminal, which will automatically gather and attach the requested system information to the bug report:

apport-collect -p linux <bug#>
As a last resort, at a minimum, your bug report should contain the output of the following commands:

uname -a > uname-a.log
cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
dmesg > dmesg.log
sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
These four files should be attached separately to the bug report (not pasted into comments or tar and zipped). Please note that dmesg output should be captured as early as possible after bootup to avoid extraneous output.

Maybe this never got worked on because I never took it out of 'incomplete'. I'll putting this ticket into the correct status and see if it gets some attention.

Output of "sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date" is now:

Unfortunately, the issue still exists. I tried both the daily-live of 14.04 (from DVD) and my current install of 12.04. Both do not make it as far as the Ubuntu logo. As you can see above, I have updated my BIOS.

Is there any specific debugging steps you would like me to take?

+ What is the manufacturer and model of the PCIe WiFi adapter?

This is stated in the bug's title but it is an "ASUS PCE-N10". Were you looking for something more specific?

+ Did this problem not occur in a release prior to Precise?

I pulled my hard drive out of my old computer and put it in my new one. I didn't try it with anything older than Precise. Do you want me to try it with an older release?

Maybe I should try booting Windows or another distro?

eviljoel, if it wouldn't be terribly inconvenient, it would be helpful if tested older releases (wouldn't go earlier than Lucid) to see if you have this problem. As well, checking Windows first would be a good gut check on HW failure.

I tried this with Ubuntu 10.04 desktop i386, Fedora 19 Desktop AMD64, Windows Vista 32 bit, and Windows Vista 64 bit. ALL FAILED to boot when the wireless card was inserted. Windows Vista 64 bit also gave me a stop screen telling me there is an unresolvable hardware issue.

I'm pretty sure this indicates that this is not an error with Ubuntu. Christopher, I'll let you close this. Of course, if there is anything else you want me to do, let me know. Thanks for your help in debugging this issue.
