Bug Description

The upgrade aborts now. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Trying to install compiz - fusion and this was where it stopped.

But I am a noob to linux so I will keep trying :)

I got this error too (ErrorMessage: SystemError in cache.commit(): installArchives() failed).

This is after doing an upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, which crashed in the middle. And then I got the message you got:

The upgrade aborts now. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Then I did a "Partial Upgrade", which I thought was successful... Then I restarted my system. When it started back up I got this crash message for update-manager.

In My Experience I comment all the repositories blackspot then I do ( from console )
apt-get update
update-manager -c -d
I hope it would give you keys to solve the problem.

I have encountered a similar error when trying to upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy. Here is the last lines from the apt.log file:

ERROR:root:SystemError from cache.commit(): installArchives() failed
*** CLB *** Initializing Google Browser Sync...
*** CLB *** Instanciating core objects...
*** CLB *** Registering with XPCOM...
*** CLB *** Adding categories...
*** CLB *** Google Browser Sync initialized succesfully!

I am attaching the whole dist-upgrade log directory as an archive. I hope this helps.

Mihai
