Bug Description

Using either the increase or decrease brightness key results in osd-message showing the slider value going up or down. However, the actual brightness of the screen stays the same.

It worked before this update^

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.2 stable kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hello.

I have not found the 32-bit kernel image in the provided repository. Could you please point me to the 32-bit deb mainline kernel packages?

Thank you.

I would like to add the following notice:

Occasionally (very rare case) the brightness could jump to maximum or minimum level with 10-20 sec delay after pressing the brightness control keys. And I am not able to change it till reboot or hybernation.

Latest notice: The adjusted brightness value is being applied after closing and opening the laptop (sleep and wake up).

I to have this bug, I have tried several fixes published about ACPI kernel settings, none seem to work.

Did anyone try the latest Kernel yet?

kernel-bug-exists-upstream

I have had time to install the upstream Kernel, as per jsalisbury suggestion. It is exactly the same. The controls move the level up/down but the actual screen brightness does not change.

I am new to this type of forum and don't know how to add a tag, so please forgive the two lines at the top of this post.

SOLVED.

By removing any acpi options added to the kernel boot parameter lines in GRUB.

update-grub

probably not needed but also did apt-get update / upgrade

downloaded the 13.10-beta2 amd / catalyst driver from amd.

first try at installing failed, it said something about missing packages / files. After investigation it appears apt thought I had the linux-headers-3.2.0.54 installed ok, but when I looked for the missing file - it was no place to be found! I forced apt to reinstall the headers (both generic and all packages) and for good measure the kernel-image:

apt-get --reinstall install linux-headers-3.2.0-54
apt-get --reinstall install linux-headers-3.2.0-54-generic
apt-get --reinstall install linux-image-3.2.0.54-generic

after that I could install the drivers ok from AMD

and it WORKS! up/down brightness are back! (after a reboot)

I also tested this with the upstream kernel 3.2.50 as suggested near the top of this thread and the drivers installed ok. I can confirm the keys are now working with that version of the kernel too.

So,

The Lenovo S205, (AMD Radeon HD 6310 Graphics) seems not to work with the generic drives, or AMD's 13.4 drivers. BUT does work ok with the AMD 13.10-beta2 drivers.

Home this helps.

Derek

I have installed amd-catalyst-13.11-beta V9.4-linux-x86.x86_64 from AMD website. Brightness control works till first sleep occured. After sleep it stops working up to next reboot. The problem still persists with the current kernel 3.2.0-57-generic #87-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 12 21:38:12 UTC 2013 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux.
