Bug Description

Since upgrading my version of GIMP on Ubuntu to 2.8.4, the application can no longer start. The splash screen remains stuck on "Looking for data files" ... "Tool options" and won't go further.

Output of gimp --version:

$ gimp --version

Using Ubuntu 13.04 and the version available from the official apt repository, and Fluxbox as desktop manager.

I have already removed the directory ~/.gimp-2.8 and let GIMP re-create it but it didn't change much.

Is there any solution for this? I'm completely stuck with my work...

Thanks,
Fabio

p.s. Weirdly, when I run GIMP in strace everything works fine. Even though, of course, running GIMP in strace every time is not a solution, it goes damn slow and it eats up my machine's resources. What happens here? Some weird race condition that disappears using strace?

I'm sorry, but I can't reproduce this bug on Ubuntu 13.04. Currently, could you please try to uninstall GIMP, then run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, and then reinstall GIMP.

Then run "apport-collect 1213462" in terminal. This will give us additional information about your system. Thank you very much. For more information see here please: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Adding_apport-collect_information_to_an_existing_Launchpad_bug
