 meld crashes every time I try to pick up a folder in the drop down comparison list. It worked fine before 1.7.4.

Could you test if meld version 1.8.0 still crashes on Ubuntu 13.10 ?
If meld 1.8.0 release still crashes, then please test latest meld 1.8.1 package - you can download latest release from http://packages.debian.org/sid/meld

Please NEVER install a debian package on a Ubuntu system. That is a really STUPID thing to do.

That being said, can this error be reproduced on xenial or later?
