Bug Description

I had Google Chrome installed and properly working on Ubuntu 12.10.

I've just upgraded to 13.04.

Google Chrome has stopped working. It's broken, destroyed.

If I click on Chrome's launcher icon, nothing happens (not even an error message!!!)

If I try to run it from a terminal:

$ google-chrome
/usr/bin/google-chrome: error while loading shared libraries: libudev.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Thank you, Canonical, for releasing a broken upgrade that renders my computer unusable.

Ironically, I've found this while trying to report a bunch of other epic fails in the upgrade, so I ran "ubuntu-bug", and I got the error when the browser was supposed to be opened.

It's unbelievable. It's been MONTHS since Ubuntu 13.04 has been released, and there are even instructions available to fix it manually. How comes this hasn't been fixed already?!?!?!?!?

How comes it doesn't even issue a warning prior to upgrading?
Every ubuntu upgrade is an epic fail.

The easy workaround is to download the deb file included in the link above, then Chrome will work again.

I wonder how it is even possible that the upgrade uninstall a package on which another installed package depends.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1210693/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

The issue is that you had an old version of Chrome installed and set as the default browser. Ubuntu does not have google-chrome in its repositories, so it could not automatically upgrade it.

1. It was not an older version, it was the latest (or that's what apt-get said)
2. Whether or not it can upgrade it, it should warn before uninstalling a package (libudev0) on which another installed package (chrome) depends (no matter whether it's in ubuntu's repositories)

An upgrade must not break third-party software installed on the system without warning.

Please add the version of chrome that you are using. We are not responsible for outdated third party applications that are broken during upgrades. The latest version of chrome should work with 13.04. The latest stable version (aka the one aptitude would pick) is 28.0.1500.95-r213514. If this doesn't solve the problem try 29.0.1547.49-r216092 which is the newest beta build available.

I have already solved the problem (as I said) by manually installing libudev0

I have Chrome 28.0.1500.95
I had installed Chrome ages ago via apt-get, and it keeps updated through ubuntu's automatic updates.

Also, if a third-party package depends on another package (in this case libudev0), then it _is_ the package manager's responsibility to either not uninstall that package, or issue a warning. Isn't that all package managers are about?

I encountered this error just now while upgrading from 12.10 to 13.04. I did a re-install of google chrome
(via synaptic) and this cured the problem. Perhaps this will help somebody.

The main issue is that the official Google Chrome package does not define a dependency on libudev0.

Correction: The dependency contains: libudev0 (>= 147) | libudev1 (>= 198)

The postinst script of the package create a symlink in /opt/google/chrome that points to the current libudev. Which is kind of strange...

A solution is to reinstall the google-chrome package. No need to install libudev0.

No need to reinstall.

Just run:

# sudo dpkg-reconfigure google-chrome-stable
