Bug Description

I did add a KONICA MINOLTA mc1650 laser printer through System Settings...

I then used the PPD file from the install DVD. I did configure the printer IP address to be 192.168.1.51 then I checked through a ping that the printer was accessible.

However when trying to print the test page I get a Printer State : "Processing - Connecting to printer". Later on the message change to "Processing - The printer is not responding." And in the Document Print Status I get a Status : "Processing - Not connected?"

And there is no way to get any document printed ...

cups version 1.5.3-0ubuntu8

The Printer Properties Settings are as follow

Printer Properties - 'KONICA MINOLTA mc1650 PPD' on localhost

Description : KONICA MINOLTA mc1650 PPD
Location : KMBTCFA56E
Device URI : lpd://KMBTCFA56E/print
KONICA MINOLTA mc1650 PPD
Processing - The printer is not responding.

Test and Maintenance

[Print Test Page] [Print Self-Test Page] [Clean Print Heads]

Thank you for any advice ...

After some research I managed to get the connection (it looks like) :

$ sudo cp -r mc1650en_linux_ppd_v004/english usr/share/cups/model
$ sudo chmod -R 775 /usr/share/cups/model/english/
$ sudo service cups restart

1. Start up the Web browser.

2. Enter the URL “http://localhost:631”, and then click Manage Printers.
   The CUPS Administration Web page appears.

Turn On the printer.

3. Click Adding Printers and Classes
   Under Printers click Add printer
   Select KONICA MINOLTAmagicolor 1650(CF:A5:6E) (KONICA MINOLTA KONICA MINOLTA magicolor 1650)

Then click Administration Tab and clcik Manage Printers. Select mc1650
Description : KONICA MINOLTA magicolor 1650
Name : mc1650
IP Address of the printer is 192.168.1.51 and
Connection should be : AppSocket/HP Jet-Direct
Device URL : http://192.168.1.51:9100

Otherwise you can modify the printer from System Settings --> Printer
Double click the printer's name : mc1650

Device URl = socket://192.168.1.51:9100

However there is a problem with CUPS backend socket as

Printer State = Idle - /usr/lib/cups/backend/socket failed

Don't know why CUPS socket fails.

[Follow On]

After a [Print Test Page] click I looked at the CUPS error log and the only line related to the failed job launch was

$ tail -f /var/log/cups/error_log

E [11/Feb/2014:14:43:05 -0500] PID 7976 (/usr/lib/cups/backend/socket) crashed on signal 6.

Sure this printer supports JetDirect?
Please add the information from these steps here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#Network_printer
Alternatively you could try the USB connection of your printer.
